May 17 Viking Funeral-Admirals Cove-Whidbey Island – Day 1

I’ve finally got 4 days off, a real(albeit short)vacation. Wendy planned this last fall after her Mom passed away. Mom said she wanted a “Viking funeral“, so we rented a house in the community where mom and husband Rod had lived 18 years ago prior to moving to Camano Island, with the intention of setting moms ashes off in a small boat “on fire”.

Wendy started packing the van on Tuesday, while I was working, then we got more done after I got home. Slept in ’till almost 8 Wednesday, took our time finishing the load(good thing we have the van, no way would all the stuff we’re taking fit in the car or truck), then left about 1045 and headed to the ferry in Mukilteo. A boat was waiting for us.

After a quick 30 minute ride, we enjoyed a nice leisurely drive north up the island, arriving at the rental house at about 1230. We weren’t supposed to arrive before 1pm, so Wendy called the owners to get permission to get in a little earlier. NO PROBLEM!

After unloading, we headed to Coupeville for lunch at Toby’s Tavern, then headed north to Oak Harbor for groceries at Safeway. Back to the house at 4, unpacking, now just getting settled in and used to the house. What a fantastic place to stay. Wendy’s mom would love it, in fact she’s here(her ashes), and I know Dad would have loved this too. A great getaway for anyone who loves the ocean!

Wendy made a quick supper at 7pm and we are enjoying the view watching ships pass thru Admiralty Inlet on their way to the Strait of Juan de Fuca and the Pacific Ocean. Since its light out until 9pm, there is no reason to go to bed early, and although no sunset due to clouds, at least its not raining!
