May 9, Day 2 in San Diego

We thought we were late in getting up at 7:30. Apparently we were in the middle. Karen & David were up first with breakfast in the hotel, then David went for a long walk. I needed to wake up so I walked the hotel stairway bottom to top(175 steps) twice before I took a shower. After that we went down to breakfast at about 8:15. When we were done Dad & Mary arrived, which surprised me as I figured they’d already been there.

The weather was overcast, cool but comfortable. At 10 we all decided to walk to the Coronado Island ferry, cross the bay to the Island and make our way to the famous Hotel del Coronado. There were a few rain sprinkles but they didn’t last long. We intended to catch a cross island bus, but they don’t run on Sundays. So we walked about 14 blocks to it through beautiful neighborhoods of expensive and mixed house styles. Most were kept very well with lots of flowers and unique plantings. Palm trees galore.

At the Coronado Hotel, things were busy as it was Mothers Day. Lots of space in several different restaurants open for us to eat, but very pricey. We ended up eating in a decent mexican themed restaurant across the street from the hotel. We then caught a 2pm local bus taking us around the island and up over the Coronado bridge back to the downtown side and ending the run at the 12th & Imperial transfer station. We then split up: Karen & David & Mary headed up town to the waterfront for a walk. Dad, Wendy & I caught the trolley blue line south to San Ysidro and the Tijuana border crossing. We didn’t cross into Mexico, we just crossed the tracks and caught the waiting train back to town.

We got back to the hotel about 5pm and relaxed for an hour. At 6 we all met for dinner at an Italian restaurant across the street from the hotel. Not the greatest food, but adequate. So ends the day. Tomorrow: a relaxing morning, then we board our cruise ship – The Rotterdam – at about 1pm for a 5pm departure. Looking forward to that!
