August 18 Dungeness Spit Lighthouse

Since I have this week off, my original intention was to drive to Crater Lake, OR on Monday. But I ended up having to put Carmel to sleep mid day Monday, so that kind of ruined my day. So I revised my plans and decided on a day trip to Dungeness Spit for Tuesday. I was there last Sept but only made it a mile before it started raining. This time I left the house at 745, stopped for gas, then drove thru Tacoma Narrows and Bremerton and arrived in Sequim about 1015. Bought myself coffee, and a sandwich for the hike, and started on the beach about 11. I was surprised how many people were in the park, but as it turned out, not that many went very far on the beach, most stayed within a mile of the beach entrance.  But there were a few of us that journey’d all the way to the lighthouse, a long walk, but well worth the effort.

I had stopped on the beach at about 4.5 miles to have my sandwich, it was almost 1 by that time and I was hungry, but I wish I had waited as the lighthouse grounds would have been a perfect lunch stop. I walked into the lighthouse building and one of the volunteers started chatting with me. There were almost 20 of them there, some retired, who paid to spend the week there to work and enjoy the views and the visitors. He and his cohort up in the tower were both from Wenatchee and happy to get away from all the smoke over there.

The top of the tower was tight, they only allow 4 up there at one time, but there was really only room for two or three with all the painting supplies they had. They were busy painting the tower a bright white. Great view up there though!

I spent an hour there, sat on a bench and took my boots and socks off and enjoyed the sun and breeze. Finally started heading back about 245 and back to the car about 430. Lots more people on the beach, and the tide was coming in.

I was tired out, so decided not to drive the long way back, instead taking the 645 ferry from Bremerton. It was a nice one hour ride to end the day with very few cars on board going east at that hour. Was home by 830.
